Elizabethan Weekend

Anna Miles

Elizabethan Weekend is a strip of wallpaper exploring the half timber decoration of Elizabethan houses. I am intrigued by the extent of the local enthusiasm for this type of architectural ornamentation, and in particular by the way it is so often employed on the motel facade. I was interested in transporting this exterior treatment to the interior. The prison like formality of the pattern raises for me the relationship between decoration and control. The idea of decorative imprisonment fascinates me. I am constantly thinking through my own love/hate (mainly love) relation with decoration as I see the enormous cultural desire for ornament met by an equally anxious desire to keep it under control.
